Gold Medal Ales are produced monthly
in recognition of some of the 'greats' of history. 'Colonel' Thomas Blood, son of an Irish blacksmith, fought bravely for Cromwell and was rewarded with large estates in Ireland. However, with King Charles II on the throne he lost everything and lived by various disruptive undercover activities. In 1671, posing as a priest, he made friends with the keeper of the Crown Jewels and, with three accomplices, he murdered the keeper and stole the jewels. As he made a dash from the Tower of London, Blood killed a yeoman warder, but was eventually overpowered and captured. The persuasive rogue refused to talk to anyone but the King and after a lengthy conversation with him he was rewarded with a £500 pension and the restoration of his estates. |
